Banteay Srei, Angkor Complex, Cambodia - While nearby Bayon and Angkor Wat demand your respect from their magnitude alone, I found quaint Banteay Srei to be the most endearing. Unlike its larger, gray stone neighbors, the Khmer constructed this smaller temple from reddish-peach sandstone. Since it carves as easily as wood, architectural craftsmen sculpted intricate, elegant designs into nearly every surface of the temple. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, scenes primarily depict legendary episodes of the principal Hindu god's life. Popping in relief from an inner sanctuary wall, this carving shows Shiva astride the toothy demon Kala.
